Can Christmas & health & fitness goals go hand in hand?
In short - YES they absolutely can.
Are you stuck on how to tackle the Christmas outings and unlimited food in December?
Here are 5 simple tips to help with having flexibility whilst keeping your fitness goals in mind...
Don’t expect fatloss in December
DON’T - put yourself into a calorie deficit and try to lose weight, this is not the month to do so. This will encourage restriction and binge episodes.
DO - increase your calories to maintenance. This will allow more flexibility and a positive relationship with food. Enjoy all foods and drinks in moderation, whilst maintaining your progress.
Plan ahead of time
DON’T - forget about a plan of attack.
DO - create a plan if you have an event scheduled. Plan your nutrition for the day around the meal you will consume out. Bank 800-1000 calories for your meal out. Consume high volume and high protein meals to keep yourself satiated prior to your meal out.
Keep your movement up
DON’T - forget about movement altogether.
DO - pick a form of exercise/movement which you enjoy and keep at it. Include morning walks, 30 minute at home workouts or a swim in the ocean. Whatever makes you happy and is convenient for you during this holiday season, do it!
Drink your fluids
DON’T - forget about your water intake altogether.
DO - continue to keep your fluids up, aiming for 2.7L per day. Have a glass of water before each meal. Consuming enough water will assist with water retention which can occur when consuming more carbohydrates, more sodium and a higher volume of food overall.
Be mindful and present
DON’T - forget that this is a time for relaxing, celebrations and connecting with family and friends. It’s a time to reflect upon all your achievements for the year, so don’t deprive yourself of this.
DO - remember to be present at each event, plan ahead so you don’t feel the need to be food orientated and stressed. Be mindful when you eat out and listen to your hunger cues. When you are 80% satisfied, then stop.
