Managing hayfever

Firstly....

What is histamine?

It is an organic compound found within body tissues. Specifically, it is present in our lungs and within various white blood cells.

What does histamine do?

Histamine regulates various functions by playing a key role in the inflammatory response.

  • When exposed to an allergy trigger, an inflammatory response is triggered within the body.

  • Histamine allows our cell walls to become permeable which allows for white blood cells to move through into the blood stream. This allows them to attack and clean up any foreign substances.

  • Unfortunately when this occurs and Histamine binds to one of its four receptors, different physiological reactions occur.

  • We can suffer from pain, a drop in blood pressure, an increase in heart rate, inflamed areas/redness, narrowing of our airways, muscle spasms.
