How to manage high cholesterol…
What is Cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a fat-soluble molecule which contributes to many processes in our body. It contributes to the function of our cells, the synthesis of vitamin D and our sex hormones and aids with the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.
What is high Cholesterol?
Cholesterol can be further separated into HDL (high density lipoproteins), considered ‘good’ and LDL (low density lipoproteins), considered ‘bad’.
An excessive amount of LDL circulating through our blood can cause a build-up of plaque in artery walls. This can narrow the passageway in which blood can flow and hardens the artery passageway. Plaque can also break away and cause blockages.
This is called atherosclerosis, which is a cardiovascular disease (CVD).
CVD’s can lead to an increased risk of heart disease, having a heart attack, brain conditions such as having a stroke, organ damage, etc.
Lifestyle changes to make which can assist in reducing high cholesterol…
Reduce the consumption of saturated and trans fats
Reduce alcohol consumption
Prioritise daily movement – specifically aerobic based exercise
Maintain a healthy body weight
There are other factors such as family history, age and medication which can all contribute to cholesterol levels in individuals, although these lifestyle changes can help to alter cholesterol levels.
